International Services

UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco is recognized throughout the world as a leader in health care, known for innovation, technology and compassionate care. At UCSF, you'll find medical solutions not available elsewhere. Our goal is to provide you with a level of customer service that matches the world-class medical treatment you will receive.

UCSF International Services assists patients seeking care from countries outside the United States. Our staff coordinates all aspects of your visit to our hospital and clinics and commits to making you and your family as comfortable as possible during your stay. Each patient receives care in an environment that respects diverse cultural traditions and backgrounds.

Please note that we do not provide medical advice over the phone or by email. We also do not provide remote second opinions except for film reviews for neurosurgery and fetal treatment.

If you are interested in seeking care at UCSF, please complete the following:

Step 1: Submit Medical Records

Before we can schedule your appointment at UCSF, you will need to provide all of your relevant medical records, professionally translated into English, to our office. Please note that we cannot accept records that are not professionally translated or incompletely translated.

Records may include, but are not limited to, patient visit notes, radiology and pathology reports, lab results and radiological images. MRI and CT scan images must be submitted on a compact disc that is DICOM-compatible. DICOM is a standard for distributing and viewing any kind of medical image regardless of original format.

Step 2: Medical Records Review

After we receive your complete records, a UCSF physician will review them to determine if your condition is appropriate for treatment at UCSF.

Step 3: Financial Clearance

If you are approved for treatment at UCSF, we will contact you and provide an estimate of financial charges for your care. You must pay these charges in full five business days prior to your care, or we will be unable to proceed. If you have international insurance, you must provide verification of authorization from an insurance plan accepted by UCSF.

Please be aware that medical care in the United States can cost about $600 (U.S. dollars) for an initial visit to a doctor, and from $100,000 to $500,000 or more for surgery or care in the hospital.

Step 4: Scheduling/Appointments

Once we receive your payment, we will confirm your appointments and/or hospitalization. We will not schedule patient appointments without prior payment.
