A Breath of Hope
A generation ago, a cystic fibrosis (CF) diagnosis was devastating for children and their parents. Now, thanks to better treatments and new drugs, kids with CF have something previous generations could have only dreamed of: a future. Meet four young CF patients, whose disease isn't stopping them from dreaming big and living life to the fullest.
Needle in a Haystack
PlaySafe, a UCSF Sports Medicine community outreach program offers free annual cardiac physicals to Bay Area high school athletes. In 2011, 327 athletes were screened and 16-year-old Ryland Burke was one of six athletes identified with a serious heart condition. Ryland was diagnosed with a rare heart arrhythmia and underwent a non-invasive heart procedure at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. After the treatment, Ryland returned to the football field where he's caught four touchdowns and many first downs for Redwood High School in Marin.
